Coming off of what can best be described as a mediocre managerial stint with the St. Louis Cardinals, Hall of Famer Joe Torre was surprisingly chosen to succeed Buck Showalter with the New York Yankees. Showalter was not brought back despite leading the Yankees to their first playoff appearance in 14 years. Torre paid immediate dividends to the Yankees as he led them to the 1996 World Series as he artfully blended the mix of veteran players such as Wade Boggs, Daryl Strawberry and Jimmy Key with the rising stars of Derek Jeter, Andy Pettitte and Bernie Williams to help the franchise’s win their first title since 1978.
Torre wore this Russell Athletic size 46 button-down jersey during that 1996 season. “NEW YORK” is sewn on across the chest in navy blue and white tackle twill. Each sleeve end has a ribbed navy blue and white pattern and Torre’s number “6” has been sewn on the back of the jersey in navy blue and white tackle twill. The Russell Athletic tag has been sewn on the bottom front left tail and “TORRE-96” tag has been sewn directly below the Russell Athletic tag. According to jersey expert Dave Miedema, a black armband, previously worn for longtime announcer Mel Allen, was removed from the left sleeve. Torre signed his name in silver marker on the “6” and inscribed “HOF ‘14” and “WS Champs ’96, ’98, ’99, ‘00”. This jersey shows light use and comes with a full LOA from PSA/DNA (AB11550) for the signature and a LOA from noted game used jersey expert Dave Miedema for the game use.
