United States legend Michelle Akers wore this Team USA warm up jacket during the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics. The Atlanta Games were the first to feature women’s soccer, with the United States keen to avenge a substandard performance in the 1995 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Akers scored the game-tying penalty in the 76th minute of the semifinal against Norway, with Shannon MacMillan’s golden goal in extra time advancing the United States to the gold medal match against China. The commanding Akers played all 90 minutes of the gold medal match. MacMillan and Tiffeny Milbrett scored for the United States in the gold medal game, powering the United States to another historic championship.
