Kareem Abdul-Jabbar took on the role of coach for Alchesay High School on the Fort Apache Reservation in New Mexico in 1998 and 1999. His friendship with a tribal elder led him there to research a book, learn about the Apache culture and ultimately turned into a coaching opportunity. To show their appreciation, Kareem was presented with this “Award of Gratitude” by the Alchesay High School via the Whiteriver School District. Kareem agreed to be paid $1.00 for his five-month coaching stint and this 16 x 12 x 9 inch award has a Morgan Silver Dollar mounted in the 5 x 7 inch black plate. Also etched in gold on the black plate is “AWARD OF GRATITUDE COACH KAREEM ABDUL-JABBAR ALCHESAY HIGH SCHOOL 1998-99 WHITERIVER UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRITC”. The top of this award has a soaring eagle. The award is in overall good condition and this item derives directly from Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and a personally hand-signed LOA from Kareem will accompany this item.
