Perhaps no season was as exciting as 1998's single-season home run race. All summer, St. Louis' Mark McGwire, Seattle's Ken Griffey Jr., and Chicago's Sammy Sosa battled it out, striving to break the most famous record in the game – Roger Maris' 61 home run mark. Big Mac eventually emerged the victor, hitting the record-breaking 62nd homer on September 8 and adding eight more by the time the season ended to finish with 70.

Presented here are a game used Official National League Leonard S. Coleman baseball and a ticket stub from the September 26th, 1998 St. Louis Cardinals versus the Montreal Expos game when Mark McGwire hit his 70th home run of his historic season. The presented Rawlings Cushioned Cork Center RO-N baseball is signed and inscribed “STL 70” by McGwire on the sweet spot of the ball in black ink. The north panel of the baseball is inscribed “D.J. Single Season Record 70 HR’s 9-27-98” in black ink by an unknown hand. The ball displays extraordinary game use and contains dirt stains and abrasions. The item comes with an LOA from JSA (Z69527) and an LOA from MEARS (318052) for the game use.

The second item in this presented lot are a trio of ticket stubs from the September 26th, 1998, St. Louis Cardinals versus the Montreal Expos game when Mark McGwire hit his 70th home run of his historic season. The Cardinals would best the Expos 6-3 The white ticket stubs with beige accents feature the St. Louis Cardinals “Bird-on-a-Bat” logo in red and yellow on the midsection of each ticket and an illustration of Bush Stadium. The price to see McGwire shatter history? $6.00. The ticket stubs are in good condition and are unsigned.
