Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa captivated America with their record-setting home run chase in 1998 reminiscent to the M & M Boys of Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris during the 1961 season. Both sluggers would surpass the record total previously set by Maris, with McGwire finishing with 70 and Sosa 66.

     Big Mac followed up his 70 home run onslaught with a just as fine 66 home run performance in 1999. He set another MLB record, this time for highest RBI-per-hit ratio in the history of the game. McGwire wore this colorful Cardinals road jersey that shows light game use. The Cardinals bat and birds logo is attractively chain-stitched in red and yellow and navy blue chenille on the front above McGwire’s “25” in red and navy blue tackle twill. Inside the left front tail is the Rawlings label with additional “52” and “SET 1 1999” flags. The back has “MC GWIRE” sewn on in red and navy blue tackle twill on a matching gray name plate and his “25” in red and navy tackle twill sewn below.

     Also included in this lot is a pair of matching road gray Rawlings pants that were worn by McGwire in 1999. These pants show light use and have a team strip tag sewn on the inner waist lining that reads “McGwire 36-39 37 99”. There are slide marks on the right rear upper leg portion. Both the jersey and pants come with a full LOA from noted game used jersey expert Dave Miedema.
