Offered in this lot is an extensive collection of memorabilia from the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup originating from the personal memorabilia collection of USWNT legend Michelle Akers. Akers led the USWNT to their second World Cup title in 1999, defeating China in a penalty shootout at the Rose Bowl. Akers was named the tournament Bronze Ball winner after dominating her defensive midfield all tournament.
This offered collection of memorabilia is headlined by an award title the “Breakthrough Event For Women’s Sports To Inspire The Next Generation of Female Athletes...Mission Accomplished” award. Akers has signed this award in black marker, inscribing “1991 [and] 1999 World Cup Champs” as well as “USA #10”. Also included are three paper booklets titled “1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup News Kit”, “U.S. Women’s National Team Bios/Updated Stats/Features”, and “U.S. Women’s National Team Player Features”. Akers has signed all three in black marker, inscribing “99 WC PR Kit For The Team / 99 World Champs!!” on the first, “1999 WC Team/Players Bio’s and Features in Media” on the second, and “1999 Media For WC Team Collection of Articles” on the third.
The next item in this lot is a 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup News Kit Vol. 2 signed by Akers in black marker. Akers inscribed “99 World Cup Champions” on this news kit. Also included in this lot are a 1999 World Cup hat, 1999 World Cup towel, and 1999 World Cup all-access pass, all signed by Akers in black or silver marker. Two “This is My Game” collectibles are also included, with both signed by Akers in silver marker. On one, Akers inscribed “99 World Cup Champs / Second Star” and on the second “99 WC Champs / Two Stars”. On both, Akers sketched two silver stars to represent the USWNT titles. Finally, seven signed tickets to various 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup games are included in this lot. O four, Akers inscribed “USA vs Brazil”. This lot comes with a LOA from Michelle Akers.
