United Stated midfielder Michelle Akers wore these black and white Nike cleats during the United States Women’s National Team’s game against Denmark to open the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup group stage at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Akers and the USWNT cruised to a 3-0 victory over their Scandinavian foes on goals from Mia Hamm, Julie Foudy, and Kristine Lilly. Akers played all 90 minutes in defensive midfield, shuttling the attack towards the Denmark box and falling back to protect her defensive line unceasingly. The USWNT went on to win their second FIFA Women’s World Cup, defeating China in a historic penalty shootout at the Rose Bowl.
These offered Nike cleats are black, with a white and black Nike swoosh sewn on each side of the cleats. A second Nike logo is sewn on each lace guard. Akers has signed the Nike swoosh on the outside of the left cleat in black marker, inscribing “#10 USA” in addition to her signature. Akers has also inscribed in black marker “6-19-99 vs Denmark 3-0” on the sole of the left cleat and “6-19-99” on the sole of the right cleat. These cleats come with a LOA from Michelle Akers. A portion of the proceeds shall benefit the Michelle Akers Horse Rescue & Outreach Inc.
