O’Neal was a dominant force during the Finals, leading all scorers with an incredible 36.3 points per game in the Lakers four-game sweep of their Eastern Conference opponent and their third consecutive NBA championship. O’Neal added 12.3 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 2.8 blocks per game to easily win the Finals MVP award for the third straight year. The first two games of the 2002 Finals took place at the Staples Center, with O’Neal putting up 36 points and 16 boards in the Lakers 99-94 Game 1 win, and 40 and 12 in their 106-83 defeat of the Nets in Game 2. During the 2001-02 season, O’Neal averaged a double-double of 27.2 points and 10.7 rebounds per game.
