Led by a smothering defense, which allowed just 11.0 points per game (tops in the nation), the LSU Tigers – under head coach Nick Saban - captured the 2003 BCS National Championship. Corey Webster led the team with seven interceptions. On the offensive side of the ball, quarterback Matt Mauck threw for 2,825 yards and 28 touchdowns. His main target was Michael Clayton, who posted 78 catches for 1,079 yards and 10 TDs. Justin Vincent rushed for 1,001 yards and 10 TDs. LSU finished 11-1 during the regular season, then defeated Georgia in the SEC Championship Game before beating Oklahoma, 21-14, in the Sugar Bowl to claim the BCS title.
