The Giants faced the san Diego Padres at Petco Park, falling by a score of 2-0 despite an excellent start from Cain. The Alabaman tossed five solid innings, allowing only two runs and striking out five Padres before he was relieved by an up-and-coming rookie by the name of Madison Bumgarner. Cain finished the 2009 season with a record of 14-8 and a 2.89 ERA. He made the first of his three career All-Star teams in 2009.
