Derek Jeter was one of baseball’s great postseason performers, leading the Yankees to five World Series titles and setting numerous playoff records during his 20-season soon-to-be Hall of Fame career. Among the records held by Jeter are the marks for most postseason games played (158), most playoff hits (158), most playoff runs scored (111), and the most doubles in the postseason (32). For his clutch performances in the World Series and postseason, Jeter was nicknamed “Mr. November” by the baseball establishment for hitting the first-ever walk-off home run in the month of November.
Offered here is the baseball hit by Jeter for an RBI double during Game 1 of the 2010 American League Championship Series between the Yankees and the Texas Rangers. Game 1 took place at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington and finished 6-5 in favor of the visitors. Jeter spurred the Yankees rally with this RBI double to kick off the scoring in the Yankees five-run eighth inning that flipped the score from 5-1 Rangers to 6-5 Yankees in a heartbeat. Brett Gardner singled off Rangers starter C.J. Wilson to open the frame before the next batter, Derek Sanderson Jeter, chased Wilson from the game with his RBI double to left field. A trio of RBI singles from Alex Rodriguez, Robinson Cano, and Marcus Thames plated the Yankees next four runs before Kerry Wood and Mariano Rivera shut the Rangers down in the eighth and ninth innings.
This double was Jeter’s 179th career postseason hit and the 28th postseason double for the 1996 American League Rookie of the Year. The RBI recorded by Jeter was the 57th of his playoff career. This baseball is an Official Major League Allan H. Selig sphere, and it shows ample evidence of game use. The baseball is accompanied by a MLB Authenticated hologram (FJ 251239) dating the use of the baseball to the top of the eighth inning of Game 1 of the 2010 American League Championship Series.
