On September 26, 2013, Mariano Rivera pitched in his last ever game for the New York Yankees. In what was an emotional and memorable scene at Yankee Stadium, manager Joe Girardi was given permission before the start of the ninth inning by home plate umpire Laz Diaz to send out long-time teammates Derek Jeter and Andy Pettitte to take the ball from Rivera for the last time. Rivera broke down and cried, while hugging his teammate Pettitte and received a well-deserved standing ovation from the Yankee Stadium faithful, who just saw the all-time leader in saves call it a career.
This offered New York Yankees home uniform – jersey and pants, were worn by second baseman Robinson Cano during this game. This would also be Cano’s last ever appearance wearing the Yankees’ pinstripes as he signed a multi-year deal with the Seattle Mariners following the 2013 season. The size 48 Majestic jersey displays outstanding game use dirt stains on the front and pine tar on the left shoulder. The interlocking “NY” is sewn on in navy tackle twill on the upper left chest, while Cano’s number “24” is sewn on in the same navy tackle twill on the back. The MLB Logo patch is sewn on in Yankee’s colors on the back neck. The left sleeve has a special “MARIANO RIVERA NEW YORK YANKEES 1995 2013” patch. The Majestic tag with “48”, “2013” and “TAPERED” flags are sewn on the bottom front left tail. There is a New York Yankees bar code tag affixed below the Majestic tag that reads “0000003823”. This jersey has a MLB Authenticated hologram (EK809362), plus a LOA from Steiner Sports (200336) all authenticating this jersey was worn on September 26th.
Also included in this lot are the matching pinstriped Majestic size 35-45 pants. These pants display heavy game use with dirt stains all over the front and a team repair on the left knee. The back of the pants have a large dirt stain on the upper left side. The inner waist lining has a Majestic tag that reads “#24 Cano 35-45 38 OB C ‘13”. These pants come with a MLB Authenticated hologram (EK809635) and a LOA from Steiner Sports all authenticating these pants were worn on September 26th.
