Utah Jazz guard Donovan Mitchell had a rookie season to remember in 2017-18. The former Louisville Cardinal was selected by the Denver Nuggets with the 15th pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, and traded immediately on draft night to the Jazz in exchange for Trey Lyles and Tyler Lydon. Mitchell, instantly handed the reins to a young Jazz team, averaged a team high 20.5 points per game as the Jazz won 48 games and made the playoffs. They faced the always dangerous Russell Westbrook and the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round of the playoffs, where the Jazz handily defeated the Thunder in a six-game series. Mitchell, only 21 years old, averaged an outstanding 28.5 points per game to lead the Jazz, adding an extra 7.2 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game in the first round. Although the Jazz would fall to the overpowering Houston Rockets in the second round, Mitchell proved that he is one of the NBA’s most exciting up-and-coming stars.

Offered here is a red Louisville Cardinals jersey worn by Mitchell during the team’s 56-53 victory over the George Tech Yellowjackets on March 1st, 2016 at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Kentucky. Mitchell, only a freshman in 2016, came off the bench to play 14 minutes for Rick Pitino’s team. He recorded four rebounds and an assist for the then-11th ranked Cardinals. Mitchell, 6’3” but with a 7’0” wingspan, played in 31 games for Louisville during the 2015-16 season, averaging 7.4 points and 3.4 rebounds in 19 minutes per game. Mitchell started nearly every game for Louisville in the next season, bumping his scoring average up to 15.6 points per game with 4.9 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 2.1 steals.
