Both games saw the Reds match up with the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field. In the first game, a 5-3 Rockies victory, Gennett finished 3-4 with a solo home run in the sixth inning off Rockies starter Jeff Hoffman. Gennett appeared as a pinch hitter in the July 4th game, launching a two-run homer off Rockies reliever Adam Ottavino in the eighth inning in his only at-bat. These were Gennett’s 13th and 14th homers of the season, and the 48th and 49th of his career. A month earlier, Gennett became only the 17th player in MLB history to collect four home runs in one game, accomplishing the feat rarer than a perfect game in Cincinnati’s 13-1 home win over the St. Louis Cardinals on June 6th, 2017.
