“Bucketfoot Al” Simmons was a fantastic Hall of Fame hitter with a .334 lifetime batting average who compiled amazing single-season averages of .392 in 1927, .390 in 1931, .387 in 1925 and .381 in 1930. Simmons is also remembered for being one of five future Hall-of-Famers struck out in succession by “King Carl” Hubbell in the 1934 All-Star Game at the Polo Grounds in New York (the others include Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx and Joe Cronin). Players elected to the All-Star team that year were awarded with impressive gold pendants like the one issued to Al Simmons offered here. This intimate personal memento contains a thumb-nail sized pendant in gold relief of a batter and catcher at the plate encircled with “All-Star Game American League” in gold on blue trim with “NY” and “1934” and a pair of crossed bats and baseball sculpted in gold leaf at the bottom. “Al Simmons” name is engraved on the pendant’s back side along with the Dieges & Clust insignia and 10K, and the pendant is attached to a linked chain that also contains a small pocket knife and nail file at the clasp. This ornamental piece of one player’s glorious past is contained in its original T.A. Chapman Co. Milwaukee jeweler’s box.
