Graded AU by NGC (brushed). Strike 5/5, Surface 2/5. Fine style. Highly sought-after Babylon Mint. Alexander III of Macedon (356 - 323 BC) ruled from 336 BC until his death. He succeeded the throne after his father, Philip II, was assassinated. Educated by Aristotle, he was referred to as "the Great" for his military, strategic (he was known for being undefeated in battle) and leadership skills. He is considered one of the most successful leaders in history, and many argue that he was the most famous figure in ancient times. This was the standard large denomination in use at that time and a single tetradrachm would have bought enough grain to feed a family of four for almost six months! As a point of reference on value, a similar-conditioned example of this type of coin (which had a more common mint) sold for nearly $1,000 in Goldin Auctions December 2020 Holiday Auction (lot #2071). Attractive About Uncirculated condition.
