Although Chicago Cubs fans claim him as their own Andre Dawson spent the bulk of his career and first 11 seasons with the Montreal Expos. One of only two players to wear an Expos cap on his Hall of Fame plaque (the other being Gary Carter), after winning the 1977 Rookie of the Year Award Dawson became an immediate cult here to Expos fans. He appeared in a 1984 short film called The Cap about a boy who was given a cap by Dawson. Dawson earned his nickname as “The Hawk,” for his ability to chase down fly balls in Montreal’s cavernous Olympic Stadium and though the field’s artificial turf surface aggravated injuries to his knees he still managed to lead the National League twice in assists and putouts at the center field position.
