Since he become a legend on the strength of his magnificent hitting, it's natural that period photos abound of Babe Ruth launching a baseball into the seats. By contrast, candid, contemporary images of his throwing form are notably rare and important. Presented here is a picture of the Bambino in 1921, as captured by widely recognized baseball photographer George Grantham Bain. In a truly evocative shot, the young Yankee is seen warming up in preparation for a game at New York's Polo Grounds. Along with a group of Culver Service labels adhered to the photo's back, there is a typewritten notation reading, "Ruth of the Yankees June 24, 1921." On that date, the Yankees hosted the Washington Senators and emerged with 9-3 win. (Ruth was responsible for a double and an RBI in the victory. The slugger was on fire offensively at the time this photo was taken: he finished 1921 with a record 59 home runs, a mark that stood until he bested it himself – with 60 homers – in 1927.) The offered piece has been certified as an original Type 1 photograph by PSA/DNA and comes with a corresponding LOA. The 4-1/2" x 6-1/4" photo concedes a few faint wrinkles and a small edge split at the bottom-left border. Minimally Very Good to Excellent presentation quality.
