In Game 3 of the 1932 World Series, Babe Ruth hit a home run that would become the stuff of legend. During his fifth inning at-bat, Ruth pointed to straightaway center field, silently indicating to Chicago Cubs pitcher Charlie Root where he would deposit the next pitch. Root leaned back and hurled a curveball, which Ruth smashed past the 440-foot center field fence. Lou Gehrig took Root’s very next pitch to the right field bleachers, and the rout was on.

This home run has taken on an almost mythical status in the 84 years since it happened. Did Ruth call his shot? Or was he just trying to intimidate Root, who had irked the Babe earlier in the game. Regardless of the true meaning of Ruth’s ambiguous pointing, his larger-than-life persona and prodigious hitting have combined to make this home run one of baseball’s most enduring legends. This bronze statue is 7 ½ inches tall and shows Ruth pointing with the first two fingers of his right hand. Ruth is resting his bat on his left shoulder. The pedestal this statue stands on features an engraving of Ruth’s signature. Goldin Auctions will be donating 5% of the winning bid price of this lot and all lots in this auction to the Babe Ruth Birthplace Museum.
