Presented is an autographed 8x10 color photograph of the historic “Bockscar,” the U.S. Army Air Force B-29 bomber that dropped the second atomic bomb on Nagasaki, Japan. The photo is signed by nine of the crew members on board for that mission, August 9, 1945. The plane was known as “Bock’s Car” because of the original commander of the plane, Frederick Bock.
At the top left of the photo is the signature “Charles Sweeney Aircraft Cmdr” in blue marker, while below in black ink is the signature “Capt. CD Albury Pilot Nagasaki Aug. 9, 1945.” Below Albury’s signature is “Sgt. Ray Gallagher Assistant Flight Engineer Hiroshima Aug. 6 1945 Nagasaki Aug. 9 1945” in black ink, next to the image of Nagasaki painted on the plane. The signature “Frederick Ashworth Commander US Navy “Weaponeer” Bockscar Nagasaki – 6 Aug. 1945” is in black marker at the bottom of the left side. The right side of the photo has the signature “Lt Fred J. Olivi co-pilot Bockscar” in black marker, followed by the signature “Jim Van Pelt Navigator” also in black marker. Third on the right is the signature “MASGT John D Kuharek Flight Engineer” in black marker. There are two additional autographs that are not identifiable, one in black ink and one in blue marker. Bockscar dropped “Fat Man” over Nagasaki, Japan during World War II in the second – and last – nuclear attack in history. This item is accompanied by a LOA from PSA (AB12690).
