Deadball era hurler Charles “Deacon” Phillippe has signed this offered index card. Phillippe pitched 13 seasons in the Major Leagues, debuting with the Louisville Colonels in 1899 at the age of 26. Phillippe won 21 games in his rookie season, including a no-hitter against the New York Giants in his seventh MLB game. With the contraction of the National League in 1900, Phillippe made the trek north to Pittsburgh, pitching the remainder of his career with the Pirates. Phillippe earned a reputation as one of the best control pitchers in the game, leading the league in walks per nine innings four times and strikeouts per walk five times. Since the establishment of the now-standard pitching defense in 1893, Phillippe holds the Major League record of 1.25 walks per nine innings. Phillippe retired after the 1911 MLB season holding a career record of 189-109 with an ERA of 2.59 and a 1.105 WHIP. Phillippe has signed this index card in black pen, while “Robert Ralich” is handwritten in gray pencil on the reverse side of the card. It has been encapsulated and authenticated by PSA/DNA (83301452).
