Jack Dempsey was the heavyweight champion from 1919 – 1926 and became one of the top celebrities of the 1920s. Known for his aggressive fighting style, Dempsey endeared himself to the sporting public and was as popular as other famous athletes of that day, including Babe Ruth. Dempsey was a money-maker for the industry as well as he was apart of the first ever million-dollar gate and attendance for his fights included an estimated 85,000 strong for his bout with Luis Angel Firpo at the Polo Grounds in New York.

Offered here are a pair of boxing gloves worn by Dempsey during the 1920s. These gloves were manufactured by Spalding and the Spalding tag is sewn on the inside of the right glove. The gloves are brown and show extensive wear with the laces still intact. The right glove shows the most wear with some tearing around the wrist and thumb area. Also included in this lot is an 11 ¾ x 18 ¼ inch award presented to Jack Dempsey. This award is from Helms Hall for their Hall of Fame Award honoring Dempsey “For Noteworthy Achievement BOXING” that was chose by the Helms Hall Board that consisted of Clinton Conger, Ned Cronin, George T. Davis, Robert Hoenig, R.C. Samulesen, Al Santoro, W.R. Schroeder and Paul Zimmerman. The award has a gold “HELMS ATHLETIC FOUNDATION” sticker and a picture of the Helms Hall on the bottom. This award is in good condition, only displaying minor edge wear. These gloves and Helms Award are a tremendous piece of boxing history and they are accompanied by a LOA from the LA84 Foundation signed by Wayne Wilson, the Vice President of the organization.
