Offered here is a true classic in the category of Babe Ruth collectibles. This magnificent wooden-based bronze clock, produced by the Abbotwares company, features a 5" bust of Ruth mounted along the top. His image is flanked on two sides by individual baseballs, one of which is inscribed, "Lifetime 714 Home Runs," and the other reads, "One Season 60 Home Runs." The electric clock, situated directly under the bust, shows hours, minutes and seconds in a rotary display. Clocks like this one, produced after Ruth's death in 1948, were the top prizes offered in various punch-board games – a popular form of small-time gambling in bars and taverns at the time. Today, these attractive timekeepers remain extremely desirable showpieces, highly coveted by collectors of baseball memorabilia and Americana alike. This particular clock is in satisfactory working order and it would make a fine table-top addition to any home or office desk. The piece displays minimal wear throughout, and reflects a dignified, stately appearance. An exceptional example of this much sought-after Ruth display item! Goldin Auctions will be donating 5% of the winning bid price of this lot and all lots in this auction to the Babe Ruth Birthplace Museum.
