Presented here is a collection of 234 responses from MLB players regarding their selections for the “All-Time All-Star Baseball Book”. These responses have been collected from some of baseball’s greatest players, including the Hall of Famers Charlie Gehringer, Monte Irvin, Fergie Jenkins, George Kell, Ralph Kiner, Phil Rizzuto, and Joe Sewell. Other respondees include Dick Groat, Rocky Colavito, Jim Bouton, Joe Collins, Ray Fosse, Ed Kranepool, Tony Kubek, Solly Hemus, Ed Lopat, Don Newcombe, Joe Nuxhall, Joe Oeschger, Johnny Pesky, Hal Schumacher, Roy Sievers, Dick Sisler, Riggs Stephenson, Marv Throneberry, Virgil Trucks, Johnny Vander Meer, Roy White, Bill Wambsganss, Burgess Whitehead, Smoky Joe Wood (who, at 95 years old, received his son’s assistance in filling out this questionnaire), Gene Woodling, Gus Zernial, William Zitman, and many more.

These questionnaires are fascinating, as they reveal the preferences, opinions, and even grudges of baseball stars of days past. For example, Virgil Trucks opines that his Hall of Fame credentials exceed those of Dizzy Dean and Hoyt Wilhelm, while Dick Groat’s wife believes that her husband is the best shortstop in MLB history. The questionnaires ask questions such as “Who was the toughest batter (or pitcher) that you ever faced?” and “Who was the most underrated player you played with or against?”. Many of these papers have been signed, and this lot has been pre-certified by Steve Grad of Beckett Authentication.
