The Copa Newton was contested between Uruguay and Argentina 27 times between 1906 and 1976, with Uruguay winning 10 titles to Argentina’s 17. The winner of the tournament would receive the prestigious trophy, donated by Nicanor Newton, in addition to serious bragging rights over the adjacent, losing nation. Offered in this lot is a medal issued to a Uruguayan player after winning the Copa Newton. It is undated. The medal is shaped like a soccer ball, with a high-relief etching of a soccer player in action portrayed on the front of the medal. Etched on the back of the medal is “Copa Newton” and “Uruguay Campeon”. The medal is in good condition and has a diameter of approximately 1.25 inches. This item comes with a LOA confirming it is part of the Rony Almeida Soccer Collection.
