The art of war changed forever on August 6th, 1945, when the United States dropped an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. This picture, taken roughly 30 miles from the city, shows the 80,000 foot high mushroom rising up from the ground below. The bomb was dropped by the Enola Gay, a Boeing B-29 Superfortress bomber, while the picture was taken by a crew member on an accompanying plane. This picture was signed by seven men who flew on the first atomic bomb mission, Paul TIbbets, C.D. Albury, Charles Sweeney, Dutch Van Kirk, Morris Jeppson, Richard Nelson, and Russell Grackenbach. Jeppson inscribed “Weapons Test Officer / Enola Gay Mission / 6 Aug. 1945”. All signatures and inscriptions are written in blue fine tipped marker. This photograph measures 12 x 9 ½ inches. This item comes with a LOA from PSA/DNA (AC04844).
