Former NASA astronaut Fred Haise has signed this photograph of the Apollo 13 module’s splashdown after its mission in space. Haise was the lunar module pilot on the Apollo 13 mission, which nearly ended in disaster due to an explosion of an oxygen tank in space. Due to the accident, Haise and his crewmates set a record as the farthest humans have ever traveled from Earth, at 248,655 miles. This photograph, which measures 11 x 14 inches, shows the Apollo module submerged in the South Pacific Ocean moments after splashdown, with only its three red-and-white striped parachutes visible. Haise has signed this photograph in black marker, inscribing “Great to be back home with a great splashdown in the south Pacific Ocean!” and “Apollo 13 LMP”. This item comes with a COA from JSA (Q28822).
