On April 5, 1994 the Florida Marlins were in Los Angeles for Opening Day. Facing Dodgers’ ace Orel Hershiser, Garry Sheffield came to bat in the top of the first. With the count 3-and-1, Sheff stroked a seeing-eye single between the second baseman and shortstop for a single. It was the first of Sheffield’s 89 base hits he’d accumulate during the 1994 season, and this is the bat he used to hit it. The Louisville Slugger C243 model bat shows outstanding use with a handle crack. There are many ball marks on the barrel and the handle has been taped in a crisscross pattern and a coat of pine tar applied to enhance the grip. Sheff’s number “10” is hand written on the knob in black marker and he has signed and inscribed the barrel with “Bat used for 1st hit 1994 season off Orel Hershiser 4/5/94.” The bat comes with a LOA from PSA/DNA (1B13275) for the game use and has been graded a near-perfect GU 9.5, plus a LOA from JSA (Z83385) for the signature.
