Presented is the autographs of Greg Mendonsa and Greta Zimmer on a reproduction 4 x 6-inch photograph of the two of them kissing in New York’s Times Square on VJ Day (Victory in Japan), August 14, 1945.  At the bottom left side of the photo is inscribed “Best Wishes, Greta” in black marker, while across the center/right is inscribed “V.J. Day 8/14/45 USS The Sullivans 1942-1946 George Mendonsa,” also in black marker.  The photograph, taken by famous lensman Alfred Eisenstaedt, portrays Mendonsa, a U.S. Navy sailor, grabbing and kissing a stranger – a woman in a white dress (Zimmer).  The photograph was published a week later in Life magazine.  Eisenstaedt’s photo captures a spontaneous moment that occurred in Times Square moments before the official announcement of the end of the war with Japan during World War II by President Harry Truman at 7 p.m. Eastern Time.
