No World Series ended more dramatically than it did in 1960. Both the Yankees and Pirates claimed victory in three games a piece and Game 7 was do or die. With the game tied going into the bottom of the 9th, Bill Mazeroski became the hero for the ages when he hit a game winning solo shot over the left field wall to win the game and the World Championship. Besides Mazeroski, perhaps no other Pirate was as happy to see that ball sail over the fence as pitcher Harvey Haddix. The veteran lefty had allowed the game-tying run in the 8th inning and with Maz’s homer he instantly became the game’s winning pitcher.

This is the cap and glove Haddix wore during that most memorable of World Series games. The Rawlings cap is in Pirates black with the classic gold “P” on its front. The inside has the leather sweatband with cap size “7” stamped in black. The edges of the leather band show the usual wear and cracking. The Rawlings label is in excellent condition and intact sewn onto the sweatband. The cap’s overall near-mint condition is probably due to it being issued to Haddix specifically for the 1960 World Series. Since the Pirates were issued World Series specific uniform sets it is not out of the realm of possibility that new caps were issued as well, explaining the remarkable condition this piece is in. Unlike his cap, Haddix's Rawlings “Trap Eze” fielder's glove shows awesome game use. The leather has been game-worn and the fingertips display the type of wear and scuffs that would be typical for a pitcher. The intricate webbing of this model is original and intact. The original Rawlings embroidered label was been removed but the stamping in the glove’s pocket remains readable. The leather piping on the glove’s edges show the expected cracking and scuffs from game use and age. Besides its having been worn during the 1960 World Series by the game’s winning pitcher, the most exciting part of it is the hand written “H.H.” in black marker that is still present on the wrist strap. It’s fun to note that big League stars mark their gloves in the same fashion as a first year little leaguer does. This most impressive lot of World Series history comes complete with a Letter of Provenance from Mrs. Harvey Haddix, as well as loa from PSA/DNA.
