The fight between Hector “Macho” Camacho and Oscar De La Hoya on September 13th, 1997 was billed as “Opposites Attack,” and was held at the Thomas & Mack Center in Paradise, Nevada. The fight between the two pugilists was for the WBC and lineal welterweight championships. De La Hoya, dubbed “The Golden Boy of Boxing” during his gold-medal winning turn in the 1992 Summer Olympics, was a fresh-faced 24-year-old with a perfect 3-0 record facing off against the veteran Camacho. Camacho, who had been one of the most dominant fighters of the 1980s and had formerly held world titles in super featherweight, lightweight and light welterweight divisions, had not had a major title fight since losing to Felix Trinidad in 1994. De La Hoya dominated the fight, besting the veteran in 12 rounds for a unanimous decision. The fight marked the last major bout of Camacho’s career, while De La Hoya’s boxing star continued to rise. Presented here is a black six-panel hat from the fight between Hector Camacho and Oscar De La Hoya. The hat features “MACHO CAMACHO” embroidered in white just above two gold stars and a pair of red boxing gloves labeled “CHAMPION” in embroidered white. The back of the hat features a link for the www.dropdelahoya.com” embroidered in white on a black with red trim banner. The adjustable, one-size-fits-all hat features a metal clamp attached to the hat for adjustment. A tag labeled “M” with “MADE IN BANGLADESH” appears attached to the inside sweat band. The hat shows heavy evidence of wear and contains white marks on the top and front of the cap and wear on the inside sweatband. The hat worn by Camacho before his historic fight against Oscar De La Hoya comes directly from one of Camacho’s former managers with a corresponding letter of provenance that will be included.
