If only there was an American League Championship Series in 1928, it might have been one of those series mentioned in folklore. Unfortunately for the Philadelphia Athletics, the New York Yankees with their 101 victories in 1928, were the American League pennant winners. Despite finishing only two games in the loss column behind the Yankees with 98-55 record, the Athletics still boasted one of the premier teams in baseball. Seven players from that team would end up in Cooperstown.

Presented here is a baseball that has been signed by 23 players – mostly members of the 1928 Philadelphia Athletics. There are eight Hall of Famers signed on this baseball with six of them representing the 1928 A’s, including Tris Speaker, Jimmie Foxx, Ty Cobb, Al Simmons, Eddie Collins and Lefty Grove. The other two Hall of Famers’ signatures on this ball include Herb Pennock, a member of the 1928 Yankees and Jim Bottomley, a member of the 1928 St. Louis Cardinals.

The signatures on this ball include Collins on the sweet spot with the opposite sweet spot panel hosting the autographs of Kid Gleason and Speaker. The north panel has Cobb, George Earnshaw, Jimmie Dykes, Grove and E.R. Vangilder of the Detroit Tigers. The south panel has the signatures of Jim Wilson, Pennock, Stan Coveleski, and Earl Whitehill of the Tigers. The east panel has Joe Hauser, Foxx, Ed Rommel, Bottomley, Howard Ehmke and Marty McManus. The west panel has the signatures of Sam Gray, Simmons, Joe Bush, Larry Woodall and Bing Miller. All of the signatures have been penned in black ink and are clear, with the ball displays light toning. This multi-signed baseball comes with a full LOA from JSA (Z61471).
