While the 1950's seemed to be dominated by the Brooklyn Dodgers, their former GM Branch Rickey was steadily rebuilding the Pirates into a powerhouse. Stocked with fence busters like Frank Thomas, Dale Long and newcomer Roberto Clemente, this '56 team contained the seeds of the ball club that would win the 1960 World Series. Along with Clemente, Thomas and Long, this bright ONL ball has been signed in blue ink by a total of 27 Pirates including Hall of Famer Bill Mazeroski, All-Star pitchers Roy Face and Bob Friend as well as manager Bobby Bragan on the sweet spot. The signatures are in beautiful condition, the ink bright and clear. A stupendous team ball featuring a 21 year-old Clemente in only his second big league season. Also included with this lot is the original 1950's vintage Spalding bag the ball came in. PSA/DNA (81931384) have graded the signatures an outstanding 9 and the ball a 6; overall grade 8. A LOA from PSA/DNA accompanies this item.
