The Boston Red Sox and New York Mets met famously in the 1986 World Series, with the Mets coming back from 2-0 and 3-2 series deficits including a miraculous late-inning comeback in Game 6 to force the deciding Game 7. The teams would not meet again until interleague play was introduced in 1997. The Red Sox came to Shea Stadium to start a three-game series with their National League rival Mets on June 11, 1999 and Red Sox Hall of Famer Ted Williams was the guest of honor. Fellow Hall of Famer Tom Seaver drove Williams out to the mound in a golf cart to throw out the first pitch.
To further honor the great Ted Williams, the New York Mets presented The Splendid Splinter with a commemorative silver bat to mark the occasion. Manufactured by Louisville Slugger, this silver-plated bat with a silver finish measures 33.75 inches long and weighs 25 ounces. The bat features a facsimile signature of Ted Williams, one that would have appeared on his bats and a special engraving that reads “PRESENTED TO TED WILLIAMS BASEBALL’S GREATEST HITTER FROM THE NEW YORK METS JUNE 11, 1999 SHEA STADIUM”. This is a tremendous Ted Williams collectible and given that it was presented to him by the Mets, making it a truly rare item. This bat comes with a LOA from PSA/DNA (1B15273).
