On September 24, 1957, the Brooklyn Dodgers played their final game at the fabled Ebbets Field, where they defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 2-0. Just two short years removed from their only World Series title, the Brooklyn Dodgers would relocate to Los Angeles the following season, along with the New York Giants, who moved to San Francisco.
One of the anchors of the great Brooklyn teams was third baseman Gil Hodges, who was an eight-time all-star, three-time World Champion and a three-time Gold Glove winner. The 1957 season was his final all-star season as he finished the year with a .299 average with 27 home runs and 98 RBI.
Offered is a game used baseball from the final game at Ebbets Field that was fouled off into the stands by Hodges. This Official National League Warren Giles baseball shows solid use displaying toning due to age and some dirt marks. On the side panel is hand written in black ink “LAST GAME EBBETS FIELD 9/24/57”. The stampings are faded but still readable. The game used experts at Mears have determined that this ball was fouled off by Hodges during the third inning of the September 24th game and this item comes with a corresponding Mears LOA.
