After 49ers legend Joe Montana was injured Steve Young stepped up and assumed the quarterback’s role so well he held the position even after Montana’s return. The 1992 was the season of the “quarterback controversy” which forced the 49ers to decide to go with their young star and trade Montana to the Chiefs. Young responded by setting the franchise record for most passing yards (4,023), consecutive passes without an interception (189) and leading the entire NFL in touchdown passes (29). The 49ers got as far as the NFC championship game before Dallas stopped them. But what most NFL fans wanted to see was a Montana-Young showdown. On September 11, 1994 that wish was granted when the 2 men met in San Francisco for what Sports Illustrated called “The Vindication Bowl”. Montana and his new team beat his former understudy 24-17. The 38 year-old Montana passed for 203 yards and two touchdowns as he proved to the 49ers and the world that he was far from finished. Young and the 49ers got their revenge however as they went on to beat the Chargers in Super Bowl XXIX, Steve Young being named the game’s MVP. This is the actual jersey worn by Steve Young in the September 11, 1994 game against Montana and the Chiefs. The right front of this white home jersey has the special patch commemorating the NFL’s 75th anniversary. The NFL shield is sewn at the bottom of the V-neck. Youngs’ number “8” in red tackle twill appears on both sleeves, front and back of the jersey. The back features “YOUNG” in red tackle twill on a white nameplate. Wilson tagging on the lower right front tail and addition size”44”. Steve Young has signed the front number “8” in black marker with the added notation “MVP ‘94”. A special gamer from one of the great quarterback match-ups in NFL history. Letter of authenticity from the San Francisco 49ers and PSA/DNA MEARS certified as a perfect 10.
