Perhaps no man in the history of sport has had to endure more pressure or had more expectations placed upon him than Jackie Roosevelt Robinson. He not only broke down the race barrier in the National Pastime but helped set in motion the entire Civil Rights Movement that followed his debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. It's hard to separate Jackie's on-field career from the overall picture of what he accomplished, but that is exactly what he encouraged the Hall of Fame voters to do when he came up for election in 1962. Ever the proponent of fair play and honesty, Jackie didn't want any special consideration or favoritism shown to him due to his color. The 1947 Rookie of the Year and 1949 National League MVP finished his career with a batting average of .311 and led his Dodgers to the 1955 World Series title and six National League pennants, deservedly securing his place in Cooperstown on the first ballot.

This 8 x 10 ¾ inch magazine page has a watercolor drawing of Robinson sliding. Robinson signed his name in black pen and added the inscriptions “To Steve best wishes” on the bottom left side of the page. The drawing is marked on the bottom with “Silverman ‘71”. The back of this drawing has a partial article that goes into detail about his retirement from the game and mentions his 1960 biography Wait Till Next Year and how his single mother took him and his four older siblings from rural Georgia to Pasadena, California at the age of eight. This unique Jackie Robinson collectible and signature comes with a full LOA from JSA (Y98347).
