Jackie Robinson 70th anniversary auction to benefit JRF ending April 29
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 4/30/2017
Led by the National League MVP Roy Campanella, the pitching of Don Newcombe and the grit of Hall of Famer Jackie Robinson, the 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers won its first and only World Series while representing the city of Brooklyn. These three greats have signed their names on this Official Southern Association baseball. Jackie Robinson signed his name in faded black marker on the panel above the stamped sweet spot with Roy Campanella’s faded black ink signature appearing on the panel below the stamped sweet spot. Don Newcombe’s faded black ink signature appears on a blank side panel. Having these three great African-American baseball legends sign this baseball is significant, given that the Southern Association had resisted integrating baseball, up until its end in 1961. The only African-American player to ever play in that league was Nat Peeples in 1954, who played in only two road games for the Atlanta Crackers. The baseball’s signatures are light and the ball displays toning and other blemishes. This multi-signed baseball comes with a full LOA from PSA/DNA (V09455).
