The assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963 in Dallas, Texas reverberated throughout the globe, and the infamous event remains the object of universal fascination. Shortly after Kennedy was shot, Lee Harvey Oswald was brought into custody and charged with his assassination. The following day, as Oswald was being escorted through the basement of Dallas Police Headquarters that was taking him to an armored car that would take him to the nearby county jail, Jack Ruby, a local Dallas nightclub owner, gunned down Oswald in front of a throng of people and in front a live broadcast from NBC. James R. Leavelle was the homicide detective who was escorting Lee Harvey Oswald as the accused assassin was gunned down Ruby on November 24, 1963. This offered 8 x 10 black and white photograph captures the exact moment when Ruby fired the gun into Oswald. In the picture, Leavelle is seen to Oswald’s right and the photograph was taken by photographer Bob Jackson. Leavelle has signed this historic photograph in black marker on the upper right corner and Jackson signed his name in lower left corner.
