Jesse Burkett broke into professional baseball with Scranton in 1888 and finally retired 45 years later in 1933. In between, Burkett was the heavy artillery on the Cleveland Spiders of the 1890’s, hitting a staggering .405 in 1895 and .410 the next season. He led the Spiders to a second place finish in 1895, then beat the Baltimore Orioles for the Temple Cup Championship. He then played with the St. Louis Perfectos (later the Cardinals), St. Louis Browns and Boston Americans (later the Red Sox). To this day Burkett holds the record for most inside-the-ballpark home runs, 55, a sum that will surely never be surpassed.
This autograph album page contains a cut signature of the Hall of Famer who has signed in black fountain pen “Jesse C. Burkett Cleveland BBC”. Adjacent to to Burkett’s cut signature is one of centerfielder Jimmy McAllen, signed “Jas R McAleen Cleveland B.B.C.”. The other side of the album page contains two additional cut signatures of Spiders: second baseman Cupid Childs (signed Clarence L. Childs Cleveland Base Ball Club”, and shortstop Ed McKean (signed EJ McKean Cleveland BBC”. The album page shows edge wear and toning but the signatures have been very well preserved within its pages. An exceedingly rare collection of signatures of Cleveland baseball pioneers including a hard to find early Hall of Famer. This signed cuts have been encapsulated by PSA/DNA (84043050).
