Joe Quinn and Bobby Lowe were teammates in Boston for two seasons, both men suiting up for the old Beaneaters franchise. Quinn, the first Australian born player to play in the Majors, was an established veteran, having debuted in 1884 with the legendary St. Louis Maroons of the Union Association, who compiled an incredible record of 94-19. The diminutive Quinn played for 17 seasons, including parts of three seasons with the Baltimore Orioles dynasty of the late 1890’s.
Lowe compiled his own 18-season career, ending his MLB tenure with as a teammate of Ty Cobb for several seasons with the Detroit Tigers. Lowe’s best season came in 1894, when the Pittsburgh native slugged 17 home runs, 115 RBI and a .346 batting average. Lowe debuted in 1890, a much-needed call-up in a season that saw scores of ballplayers defect to the short-lived Player’s League. Each man has signed a cut that has then been affixed to this album page. Quinn signed his as “J J Quinn”, inscribing “2 Base Boston League Club” beneath his signature. Lowe signed as “Robb L Lowe / Fielder / Boston B.B.C.” Both signatures have been written in black pen. “Players” has been inscribed in an unknown hand above the signatures.
