After a National League MVP season that saw St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Keith Hernandez hit .344 with 116 runs scored and 105 RBI, it’s easy to see why the Missouri Athletic Club, which formed in 1903, chose Hernandez for its Sports Personality of the Year award. The trophy features a metallic brass-colored cup resting on two wooden bases with a black plate on the front that reads “MISSOURI ATHLETIC CLUB,” “SPORTS PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR,” “KEITH HERNANDEZ” AND “1979” over four lines. The trophy does show heavy signs of wear. The cup is tarnished and loose from the base, which may just require a proper tightening. The face plate holds a scratch that extends from the right side through the word “THE” in “SPORTS PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR.” The wood base is also home to minor scratching and dings. The item still makes for an interesting show piece, especially to a Hernandez collector. LOA from Keith Hernandez.
