Knute Rockne’s final Notre Dame team was one of his best, going 10-0 in the 1930 season. Their schedule included wins over powerhouses Pitt, Army, Penn, and a season ending victory over USC at Memorial Coliseum. Tragically, Rockne would perish in a plane crash in the spring of 1931, ending his 13-year tenure as the head coach of Notre Dame.
Offered here is a cut signed by Rockne in gray pencil. The cut is displayed below a photograph of Rockne’s final backfield of Frank Carideo, Joe Savoldi, Marchy Schwartz and Marty Brill. These offensive players recalled the great “Four Horseman” backfield of Rockne’s earlier tenure, although all were stars in their own right. A small plaque that reads “’The Last Backfield of Knute Rockne’ / 1930-Wins-10 Losses-0 / Died in Plane Crash – March 31st, 1931”. This item comes in a 16.5 x 16.5 inch frame. This signature is accompanied by a LOA from PSA/DNA (V02938). Please note that this LOA was originally for a multi-signed document including Rockne’s signature. Only the Rockne signature is present in this display.
