Jackie Robinson 70th anniversary auction to benefit JRF ending April 29
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 4/30/2017
Jackie Robinson and Brooklyn’s Ebbets Field are forever linked in baseball memory. Robinson’s breaking of baseball’s color line and his gritty type of play found the perfect home in Ebbets Field. It’s only fitting that this large scale photo mural from the most famed of all ballparks is of Jackie.
While we cannot prove it, this print was once thought to have hung in Ebbets Field, most likely in one of the concourses or concession areas. The mural shows Jackie at his best - charging hard into second base. Red Schoendienst of the rival St. Louis Cardinals looks on helplessly as Robinson eludes the tag and contemplates taking an extra base. The print is mounted on board and framed with rustic wood. The condition is well used - this looks as if it hung in the most revered of all urban ballparks and has many abrasions and scuff marks on the frame and surface. Two strips of type have been mounted on the top border reading “Original 1948 photo from Ebbett’s Field (sic) Jackie Robinson & Red Schoendienst”. The photo mural has been framed to 29 x 35 inch dimension.
