Presented here is a bat used by the first ninth inning relief specialist, Lee Smith. This bat was used during his rookie era, in the early 1980s. Smith broke into the Majors in 1980 with the Chicago Cubs, staying with the team until 1987. Smith hit the only home run of his career in 1982, taking Phil Niekro of the Atlanta Braves deep at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium. When Smith retired after the 1997 season, he was the all-time leader in saves, with 478.
This Louisville Slugger B267 model bat shows ample evidence of use. “46” and “B267” are written on both the knob and top of the barrel. Smith signed the barrel of this bat in black marker, adding the inscription “Game Used Rookie”. This item comes with a LOA from Smith himself.
