Three times Fernandez tried to defect to America, each time resulting in a Cuban prison sentence. Finally, in 2008 he was successful and began his dream of playing major league baseball. This bat, dating from his rookie year in 2013 in which he won the NL Rookie of the Year Award, is a wooden symbol of the realization of that dream. The Old Hickory J143M bat shows moderate use and has been cracked. Fernandez’s number “16” is on the knob end. Letter of Authenticity 1B08943 from PSA/DNA who have given this bat a grade of GU 8.
