Still one of the most shocking and improbable feats accomplished in major league history, Roger Maris 61st home run of the 1961 season was widely regarded as inconceivable prior to the season. Despite the fact that Maris had hit 39 home runs and won the American League MVP award in 1960. If anyone would have been expected to break Ruth’s single-season home run record set in 1927, most fans and observers would have thought it would have been Maris’s teammate Mickey Mantle. But on October 1, 1961 in the final day of the season, Maris connected off Boston Red Sox hurler Tracy Stallard in the bottom of the fourth for the only run in the Yankees 1-0 victory. A ticket to sit in the Grand Stand that day cost $1.30. The one offered here for “Game No. R Series A” # “01546” is the Rain Check portion of the ticket detached perfectly from the perforation measuring 1 ½ x 2 ½ and is in near mint condition and housed in a hard plastic slab with New York Yankees Yankee Stadium in printed across the top. The Yankees “bat in the hat” logo is stamped in red over the pricing information. The ticket is accompanied by a pair of photos of Maris following through on his historic blast. The first is a 6” x 8” classic shot, most often associated with #61, the second is a 7” x 8” AP image taken from behind with the following cutline: (NY17) New York, Oct. 1—AS ROGER HITS HIS 61ST—Roger Maris follows the ball with his eyes as bangs out his 61st home run in the fourth inning at the Yankee Stadium in New York today. Russ Nixon is the Boston Catcher. (AP Wirephoto) (See AP wire story) (prll603stf) 1961. Three –piece set is contained in a 28” x 15” black metallic frame and ticket is PSA encapsulated and authenticated #17337444.
