While his exact date of birth remains a mystery, Leroy “Satchel” Paige cut a figure that would be hard for most modern-day fans to comprehend. Consider that, after a career that saw him star in the Negro Leagues as well as internationally, he became the Major League’s oldest rookie at about age 42, and he accumulated 28 wins over five seasons while pitching in the bigs, returning just before his 60th birthday in 1965 to throw three scoreless innings. This framed, matted piece depicts the legendary Paige in a 5x7.5” illustration donning the uniform of the St. Louis Browns in the latter stages of his career. It also includes a pair of autographs – one on a business card from his early 1980s tenure as vice president of the Springfield Redbirds, and another apparently cut from a 3x5” index card. The entire item measures 11x13” plus frame, a tremendous memento of this stellar Hall of Famer. LOA from JSA.
