Although their storied marriage that followed their eloping in 1954 was brief (Monroe filed for divorce less than a year after the wedding), DiMaggio’s love for Monroe would never relent. In fact, DiMaggio re-entered Monroe's life as her marriage to Arthur Miller was ending. On February 10, 1961, he secured Monroe’s release from Payne Whitney Psychiatric Clinic and although they claimed their new relationship was "just friends," rumors of a possible remarriage wildly circulated. It was referenced in Maury Allen’s biography that DiMaggio left his post-career employment in August 1, 1962 because he had decided to ask Monroe to remarry him. Instead, Monroe was tragically found dead in her Brentwood, Los Angeles, home on August 5. DiMaggio claimed her body and arranged for her funeral at Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery, barring Hollywood's elite from attending. He had a half-dozen red roses delivered three times a week to her crypt for 20 years and he never married again. When he died in 1999, his last words were "I'll finally get to see Marilyn." Offered here is a beautiful original photo of Monroe and the Yankee Clipper along the beach. DiMaggio seems to radiate with affection toward Monroe has he walks the shore with a fishing pole in one arm and his other draped around his life-long love. Monroe, in classic fashion, is stunning in her light-colored outfit, scarf and sunglasses. This is a wonderful original photograph that crosses the bridge between the worlds of sports and Hollywood stardom.
