No player in the history of the game was more destined to be a ballplayer than Mickey Mantle. From the name given to him at birth - his dad was a Mickey Cochrane fan - to his being touted as the next DiMaggio before he even made the Yankees, Mickey Mantle was destined to become a star. That much was evident from his days at Commerce High where his speed made him a star on the basketball court and his ruggedness propelled him to success in football. The 15 year-old Mickey Mantle stares out across almost seven decades, an innocent teen just a few years away from becoming the greatest baseball player in the country. Besides his portrait found in the sophomore's section, Mickey appears in the group photographs of the 4-H Club, Basketball and football squads. It is interesting to note that Commerce High did not field a baseball team when The Mick was a student. The cover of the book shows good wear and some water stains. The inside front page has the name of "Mrs. J.S. Jacoby" written in pen and the interior pages bear the signatures of many student though sadly not a young Mickey. The book is complete though there is age toning throughout and the first few pages of the volume has water staining in the upper right corners. Since the total enrollment at Commerce High was no more than 200 the number of surviving yearbooks featuring the young Hall of Famer has got to be quite small.
